Subcontractors Subcontractors Company Harlan McPhee North McPhee South Powerhawke Ravex Richards Company Using the Form Job Name * Job Name and/or Number Date * Subcontractors At Phalcon, most of our work is accomplished on projects that have other contractors on it. The services of these other contractors are necessary to move the project forward. Like any new addition or change in a workplace, these subcontractors can create hazards that put our employees at risk of injury. It is important to consider the hazards and what can be done to mitigate them. Dangers of Working Alongside Subcontractors Subcontractors, no matter how small, can create additional hazards in the workplace. The actual work tasks being completed by the subcontractor along with what is already occurring at the worksite will determine the specific hazards that need to be addressed. The employees of the subcontractor can also be put in danger by the work that Phalcon is completing. Planning and communication are key to help prevent incidents. Best Practices for Working around Subcontractors at the Field Level • Meet with any subcontractors prior to work beginning for the day to discuss work plans for work expected where you are working. Communicate with those working in your area, including your crew’s scope of work. • Ask the other subcontractors for their scope of work as well as their plan to mitigate the hazards of their work. • Schedule or work around each other’s work tasks, when possible, to avoid unnecessary exposure to risks. (An example of unnecessary risk due to poor planning: The subcontractor working in an aerial lift at the same time your crew is installing pipe nearly directly underneath of the lift.) • Continue to keep open communication between each workgroup affected by the subcontractor’s scope of work each day as well as the entirety of the project. • Speak up to a supervisor if another subcontractor’s employees are putting our employees at risk of an injury. • Always use your Stop Work Authority whenever a hazard is created that could injure you or one of your co-workers. • Be aware of what is going on around you. Use the 20-20-20 rule to evaluate your work area for any potential hazards created by others. Every 20 minutes, stop for 20 seconds to look 20 feet around you to see if any new hazards have been introduced. Subcontractors working for us Depending upon the scope of work, we may have subcontractors working for us. These can include tasks like Fire Alarm, Testing, Lightning Protection, Civil work, Foundation Drilling and others. When we have subcontractors working for us, it is important to understand that we need to ensure that they work safely, follow OSHA regulations and any site-specific safety rules. If an incident or injury occurs with the subcontractor, the client will likely be looking to us for answers. Any subcontractors working for us should be involved in a group tailboard to discuss what each contractor is doing for the day, any expected site activity, emergency procedures and any other items that could affect work for the day (i.e. weather). Following this, a task specific pre-job brief should be performed by each contractor. Summary Subcontractors are necessary for the completion of work in every industry. Even if they are an outstanding company with an excellent safety record the mere fact that they are completing additional work in your workplace means new hazards will be present. Take the time up front to address work plans, concerns, hazards, mitigation actions, etc. to help to ensure the job goes smoothly and everyone goes home at the end of the day.
