Many of these types of injuries occur from tools falling from equipment, items falling onto an employee, not using proper personal protective equipment (PPE), or being hit by vehicles/equipment in the workplace. At the Phalcon companies struck-by hazards are one of our leading causes of injuries year after year. Struck-by injuries are produced by forcible contact or impact between the injured person and an object or piece of equipment and are categorized as follows: Struck-by flying objects, Struck-By Falling Objects, Struck-By Swinging Objects and Struck-By Rolling Objects Safe Practices to Prevent Struck-by Hazards: • Inspect power tools and equipment to ensure protective guards and side handles (where applicable) are in good condition. Maintain a firm grip on tools. • Use tools and equipment in accordance with the manufacturer’s operating instructions. • Keep out of the line of fire with tools or other situations that could possible kick back or create flying debris • Stay out of areas where work is being performed overhead. Never work under a suspended load or piece of equipment • Establish a drop zone below elevated work areas • Secure tools and materials from falling by using toe boards, screens, lanyards, debris nets, etc., where needed • Be aware of the swing radius of cranes and equipment and stay far back. Always make eye contact with equipment/vehicle operators when moving around that piece of equipment/vehicle • Utilize tag lines with all lifts • Motorized equipment shall be equipped with an operating back up alarm or a spotter must be utilized • Ensure that the operator of the equipment is licensed/certified to use that particular piece of equipment • Be aware when stacking material to prevent sliding, falling or collapse • Follow the proper work zone protections according to the MUTCD when working on public and private roadways • Use the parking brake and chock the wheels, where required, when parking a vehicle • Keep your hands and feet inside an aerial lift when moving. Use the grab rails. • Never work distracted. Put the cell phone away and remain aware of your surroundings (Situational Awareness). 20/20/20 is a great tool to use to help maintain situational awareness. Every 20 minutes, take 20 seconds to look around your work area 20 feet to see if anything has changed and if any new hazards have been introduced. It is also a good idea to use 20 seconds when you first get to your task location to look for hazards that you could be exposed to. It is important to eliminate as many as the hazards that cause these incidents as possible in your workplace. • Utilize proper PPE. Using the hierarchy of controls, PPE is always the last line of defense. It is more effective to use other methods to address the hazards (elimination, engineering controls, substitution, administrative controls). Identifying and communicating the hazards and controls associated with struck-by hazards at the daily pre-job brief will go a long way towards preventing needless injuries.
