These often result from falling objects, power tool use, or flying debris. Preventing these incidents requires a combination of awareness, training, and proper safety measures. Understanding Struck-By Hazards Struck-by injuries occur when a worker is hit by a moving object, such as tools, materials, or equipment. These incidents can be divided into four main categories: 1. Flying Objects – Tools or materials that are accidentally thrown or ejected. 2. Falling Objects – Items dropped from heights, such as scaffolding or cranes. 3. Swinging Objects – Loads that move unpredictably, especially in heavy equipment operations. 4. Rolling Objects – Vehicles or machinery that strike workers due to improper operation or lack of visibility. Prevention Strategies Worksite Precautions • Wear your hard hat to protect against falling objects. • Secure tools and materials properly when working at heights to prevent accidental drops. • Use toe boards, debris nets, and catch platforms to minimize the risk of falling objects. • Establish exclusion zones around heavy equipment and crane operations. Vehicle Safety • Require high-visibility clothing so workers are easily seen by equipment operators. • Implement spotters and warning systems when operating large machinery. • Maintain clear pedestrian walkways separate from vehicle traffic. • Ensure equipment operators are properly trained and certified. Tool & Equipment Safety • Use guards when working with power tools that create flying debris. • Utilize the tool side handles to maintain control of the tool. • Always use the tool in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions, i.e. use two hands for a two-handed tool. • Always inspect tools for damage before use. Remove defective tools from service. • Maintain proper storage and handling of tools to prevent accidental contact with blades. Training & Awareness Regular safety training is essential to help workers recognize potential struck-by hazards and take proactive steps to minimize risks. Toolbox talks, safety meetings, and hands-on demonstrations reinforce good practices and foster a safety-conscious work environment. By implementing proper safety measures, adhering to training protocols, and maintaining situational awareness, construction teams can significantly reduce struck-by injuries, creating a safer worksite for all.
