The employee is seen by a physician who releases the employee to return to work (RTW) with limitations. The injury will prevent the employee from performing the tasks that they were performing prior to the injury. What should you do now? If you haven’t done it already, notify the safety department. They can help you work through the injury and getting the employee back to full duty. RETURN TO WORK PROGRAMS When possible, Phalcon has always supported Return to Work (RTW) Programs. These programs allow injured employees to return to work, performing tasks that may not have been part of their normal duties prior to the injury, until they have recovered sufficiently and are effectively able to perform their original work functions. The benefits of these programs are numerous, they include the following: EMPLOYEE BENEFITS Frees the injured employee from financial stress. A RTW program enables the recovering employee to begin earning their original wages sooner. Keeps the recovering employee’s skills sharp. By avoiding a long, stagnant layoff, the employee will retain their skill set(s). Keeps the injured employee socially connected. A relatively short absence from work allows the recovering employee to avoid feeling socially isolated. Additionally, the opportunity to be productive gives the employee a sense of purpose. Reduces recovery time. An injured employee’s safe and swift reintegration into the workplace, even in a different role, can help speed the healing process. Boosts morale. Knowing the employer has taken the necessary steps to ensure a safe return to work will fuel the recovering employee with optimism, confidence, and peace of mind. Having the opportunity to be – and feel – productive is what every employee wants. COMPANY BENEFITS Reduces costs. By offering injured employees the opportunity to assume a modified role – when it’s medically feasible – employers can help to minimize their Workers’ Compensation costs. What’s more, the swift return of an experienced employee will save the employer the cost of finding and training a temporary replacement. Reduces turnover. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there’s only a 50 percent chance that an injured employee will return to work after a six-month absence. Having a RTW Program that facilitates an employee’s safe and supportive reentry may increase the likelihood of the employee’s return. Maintains productivity. Injured employees who return to work, even in a limited capacity, can still be valuable contributors. Lifts team morale. Facilitating an injured employee’s safe but swift return to work shows that the employer cares about its employees and their welfare. So, We Realize the Benefits of the RTW Program, NOW WHAT? Implementing a successful RTW Program. This, especially for the foreman, may be the most difficult task to accomplish. It will take consultation with the safety department and project management team to produce the desired outcome. The Safety Department will handle the consultation with our medical professionals and healthcare providers. We will let them know that Phalcon is committed to providing a RTW Program based on their recommendations and restrictions. Each RTW Program must consider: •The injury and the extent of the injury. •The work tasks that are available. •The time that the RTW will be implemented and the transition time into additional work tasks. •Potential changes to the job dynamic. •The willingness of the employee to work under a RTW Program. RTW Program Best Practices Beyond compliance with the RTW Program, there are other best practices to follow, including: •Stay diligent. Invest the time and resources to promote the RTW program to all employees. •Train foreman, managers, and supervisors in work disability prevention and the RTW Program. •Reach out to recovering employees on a regular basis. •Communicate regularly with the treating physicians and occupational health specialists to ensure a smooth transition. •Phalcon’s RTW Program must match the employee’s functional capacity. Schedule tasks with the employees’ restrictions in mind and monitor them to ensure that they work within the medically approved parameters. Working outside the restrictions can potentially cause a re-injury or prolong the recovery period.
