Below are some of the incidents that Phalcon has experienced with the use of hand tools. Think about these and how they could apply to the work that you are doing. An employee was hammering a chisel, he missed the chisel, and struck his left hand with the hammer, between the thumb and forefinger. An employee was hitting a brick chisel with a heavy hammer. The hammer skipped off the chisel head and struck the employees right thumb. An employee pinched his right hand in cable cutters. He did not seek treatment immediately and developed an infection which required hospitalization. This resulted in an OSHA record-able injury. Employee stuck his finger into a cable pulling head. The head has internal blades which let the wire slide into it and dig into the wire to keep it from coming out during a wire pull. The employee was unable to get his finger back out of the head. This resulted in a finger laceration/dislocation and it was an OSHA record-able injury. Employee was stripping a concrete form using a digging bar. The motion and stress caused a back strain. An employee was attempting to lift a large circular crane mat when he heard his finger "pop". He used his left hand to lift on rope handle then placed his right hand under to lift it up on its side to roll it. The employee was treated with a splint/brace to wear and physical therapy. This resulted in an OSHA record-able injury. Employee was loosening a bolt on an insulator, when the wrench slipped and he caught his fingernail on the structural steel, ripping it backwards and most of the way off. Stitches were required and the employee was given restrictions. This resulted in an OSHA record-able injury. An employee had taken off his gloves off to warm up however he did not put them back when he went back to work. The employee made a cut on a section of 2” EMT and in the process of filing the pipe, he slipped and cut his finger on the file. Some of the lessons learned here included keeping fingers and other body parts out of the line of fire, read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions (Do Not Insert Finger Into Wire Snagger Tools), providing adequate supervision and instruction to apprentices and wearing gloves to protect your hands Learn from these incidents so you don’t suffer the same pain as those who have already been injured.
