The 101 Days of Summer Program - Introduction The 101 Days of Summer Program - Introduction Company Harlan McPhee North McPhee South Powerhawke Ravex Richards Company Using the Form Job Name * Job Name and/or Number Date * The 101 Days of Summer Program - Introduction In 2019, the Phalcon companies inaugurated their first 101 Days of Summer campaign, placing a special emphasis on safe behavior during the traditional peak construction season that runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day. For this, the seventh year of the 101 Days of Summer, we’re making some changes. First, instead of sending text messages every day, we’re going to focus on a work-related theme for each week. Crews will receive and review a safety brief and related text message on the week’s theme. In addition to the safety brief on a work-related topic, crews will also receive an optional safety brief related to summer safety that they can cover as an option. Finally, each week the safety group will publish to the Phalcon You Tube site a brief video we’re calling “Grounded”, which will augment the focus theme for the week The videos will be created in-house, without a lot of glitzy production values, will run about 60 to 90 seconds each, and will be presented by a variety of Phalcon employees at all levels of the company. A link to the video will be provided each week on Thursday. Typical Weekly Schedule Monday – Toolbox Talk Tuesday – Optional Safety Topic Wednesday – Safety Text Message Thursday – “Grounded” Video Friday – Reflect on what a great safe week we had! This year the 101 Days of Summer program will run as a hybrid. The summer months bring additional risk to the health and well-being of employees in several areas, including heat stress, poisonous plants (like poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac), insect bites and stings, holiday driving (traffic fatalities from the three summer holidays are twenty percent higher than traffic fatalities from the three fall/winter holidays), soft tissue injuries, fatigue from storm restorations, and reduced air quality from smog or wildfires. But just because a risk increases during the summer doesn’t mean it should be a primary focus of prevention – our primary focus must always be on events that could lead to what we call Significant Injuries and Fatalities (SIF). So while we will certainly acknowledge the injury risks that truly do increase between Memorial Day and Labor Day, we will also take the opportunity to present prevention ideas for some of the most hazardous tasks we do: work on energized electrical equipment, work from heights, and work with equipment that could strike us or in which we can catch body parts, to name a few. We believe working safely takes the entire Phalcon community. Sending safety briefs does no good if work in the field doesn’t reflect the best practices contained in them. Collecting good catches and near misses from the field does no good if people back in the office don’t act on the suggestions and recommendations, to the extent possible, from those who know the work best. This summer, we want to ensure we have effective controls in place for the hazardous tasks we do. We want to make sure the activities we love to do in the summer – whether it’s gardening, playing golf, or horsing around with the kids or grandkids – don’t stress our soft tissues in ways that lead to muscle injuries when we’re back on the job. We want to talk through anything we aren’t sure about, to get the best consensus possible about how to approach an upcoming task, especially if it’s a task we don’t do all that often. Above all, we want to be sure we work as a team to help guarantee each of us goes home at the end of each day in a condition in which they can enjoy the beautiful weather, sunny evenings, time with students on vacation, and all the other wonderful things that come with summer in the eastern part of the United States.
