The coronavirus is a virus that can cause an infection in your nose, sinuses, and upper throat. Most coronaviruses aren’t dangerous. A new type of coronavirus (COVID‐19) can be fatal, though. This virus is thought to spread mainly from person to person, between people who are in close contact with each other (within 6 feet), and through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It may also be possible to be exposed by touching a surface with the virus on it then touching your mouth, nose, or eyes. Prevention and minimizing risk remain the number one action we can all take to help safeguard our people, facilities, and communities. We all have a role to play in safety and protecting each other. According to the CDC, actions you can take help prevent the spread of respiratory virus, include: • Avoiding close contact with people suffering from acute respiratory infections. • Encourage sick employees to stay home • Send home any employees who exhibit symptoms (shortness of breath, fever, dry coughing) • Maintain 6’ from anyone that is coughing or sneezing. Try to maintain 6’ of distance from other people in general. • Frequent hand-washing (For minimum 20 Seconds). • Practice cough etiquette (maintain distance, cover coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues or clothing, and wash hands). • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. You can pick up viruses on surfaces you touch which can enter your body through those avenues • Within healthcare facilities, enhance standard infection prevention and control practices in hospitals, especially in emergency departments. What to do if you suspect infection: • Stay home, except to get medical care. • Do not go to work, school, or public areas. • Use a separate restroom if possible. • Separate yourself as much as possible from other people and pets while you are sick. • If you become sick and you suspect you have been exposed, please contact your health care provider immediately (call ahead before you go to the doctor’s office or emergency room and tell them about your recent travel and your symptoms).
