This is where your first aid training comes into action. The construction industry is a leader in incidents and the injury rates continue to be high, so knowing basic first aid is necessary. REMEMBER: CHECK / CALL / CARE, Check the injured worker; Call 911 for help, Care for the injured worker. The first person on the scene of an injury should use their skills to evaluate whether or not emergency services will be needed. If the injury warrants it, immediately call 911 or other posted emergency numbers to get help on the way. The method of communication and the physical address should be covered as part of the daily tailboard talk every morning. Depending upon the jobsite, it may also be necessary to send someone out to direct emergency response vehicles to the correct location. This can save precious minutes for the emergency responders trying to find the right location. It may not be readily apparent how to get to the injured person. Use your training to stabilize the injured employee until the emergency services arrives. The following is a list of helpful tips. 1. Always check the scene to ensure that it is safe for you to approach the injured employee 2. Act promptly but not hastily – Check the ABC’s, Airway, Breathing and Circulation. 3. Start CPR and emergency rescue breaths if necessary. If an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) is available, have it brought to the scene. 4. Stop the bleeding -- a snug bandage or a pressure dressing will usually stop the bleeding. Use direct pressure to slow bleeding. Avoid direct contact with blood, always use gloves. 5. Look for shock; skin will feel cold and moist, weak pulse, face drained of color and fainting. Wrap the victim in blankets, have them lie down, slightly elevate their feet and try to keep them calm. 6. Caution, handle with care -- a person with a suspected neck or back injury should not be moved until professional rescue personnel are on the scene. Assist them if requested. 7. Splint broken bones -- a splint can be made from any firm object that is long enough to reach beyond the broken bone. Immobilize the joints above and below the break. 8. Never attempt to give liquids to an unconscious victim. 9. Bandage wounds to help protect against infection -- the wound should be covered with a sterile dressing before the bandage is applied. 10. Remember to wear universal precaution protective equipment. Assume that all bodily fluids are potentially infectious and make sure all waste is disposed of properly. 11. If a worker has received an electrical shock, always send the worker to be evaluated by a physician or other licensed health care professional. 12. Report the Accident to the Safety Department, as soon as possible, once the victim of the accident has been treated or transferred to the Clinic or nearest Hospital. 13. Remember to preserve the incident / accident scene, take photos and record the names of the witnesses. Have you forgotten what you learned a while back? Resolve to upgrade your first aid skills. Contact the Safety Department, or Union Hall; they have regularly scheduled courses covering FIRST AID and CPR. BE SURE YOUR FIRST AID KIT IS FULLY STOCKED AND CONTAINS UNIVERSAL PRECAUTION PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT. AN EMPTY FIRST AID KIT WILL NOT HELP ANYONE!
