We need energy to do work. We just need to stop it from contacting people in ways we don’t want. A small amount of energy – like what occurs when you drop a paper clip on your foot – doesn’t harm anyone. But when the energy increases, serious injuries or even death can occur. Three premises: • Energy causes harm. • More energy causes more harm. • Controls save lives. The Energy Wheel has ten types of energy to assess and control: gravity, motion, mechanical, electrical, pressure, sound, radiation, biological, chemical, and temperature. How some relate to electrical or utility contractors is obvious. How others relate is less so, including radiation (heat from the sun is radiation), biological (a rash from poison ivy or an illness received from a tick bite), and chemical (asbestos, silica, hexavalent chromium, etc.). The job brief/PTP is the time to discuss the types of energy on the job that can cause harm. Studies show that 45% of the energy that could harm crews isn’t discussed at the job brief, and that the use of the Energy Wheel can increase that to up to 85 percent. As you discuss your job tasks at the beginning of the shift, use the Energy Wheel to ensure you’re considering the types of energy that can cause harm and the controls necessary to ensure everyone returns home safe at the end of the day.
