We have been hearing a lot about them for the past few years, and for good reason. Environmental conditions have enabled a rise and spread in tick populations, and people have been traveling further afield which can contribute to the transmission and the presence of tick borne diseases. The areas of the US that appear to be affected to the greatest extent are the Northeast, upper Midwest, and southern states. There have been dramatic increases in tick borne diseases in the last decade. The diseases which have displayed the greatest increases include Lyme disease, Powassan Encephalitis and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. Many of these diseases have serious complications and are even potentially fatal. The spread of these diseases is nearing epidemic proportions and should be taken seriously. Tick diseases are caused by bacteria, viruses, and parasites which enter the bloodstream after the tick has bitten and has been attached. Some of these diseases have visible symptoms while others do not display any apparent symptoms until the condition manifests itself. Many of these conditions are also hard to distinguish and diagnose. PREVENTION is the key. Here are a few things that one can do to minimize or prevent the chance of getting bitten: COVER UP: Wear long pants and long sleeve shirts whenever possible, especially if you will be in high brush. Tuck in shirts, and tuck pant legs into your socks. The less exposed skin – the better. AVOID: Tick habitat includes mainly outdoor areas with woods, shrubs, weeds and tall grasses, particularly in humid environments. Avoid these areas if possible. REPEL: Apply an insect repellent that contains a minimum of 20% DEET, picaridin, or IR3535 to the skin. Apply permethrin containing repellent of at least 0.5% permethrin to the clothing. Apply the permethrin and allow it to dry on the clothing BEFORE wearing it. Applied in this manner it will be effective for an extended period of time and will last through a washing. FR/AR Clothing requires a repellent that is specifically allowed for such material. Repellent that is safe for FR/AR clothing will be stated on the container. CHECK: Check yourself after your outdoor activities. Use the buddy system if possible. Check your pets for ticks daily. WASH: Wash yourself with hot water and soap as soon as you can. Wash your clothes in hot water. DRY: Tumble dry your clothing on a hot setting for at least 10 minutes. In the event that you do find that a tick attached to yourself, the sooner you remove it the better the chances of not getting the diseases transmission: There are several tick removal tools that have been proven effective in tick removal. The Tick Key and the Tick Twister are two of these. Having experience with both of these, I prefer the Tick Twister. Easy to use and painlessly removes the whole tick. If you attempt to remove the tick with tweezers, clean the area AROUND the tick with alcohol if you can. Place the tweezers tip on the skin and grasp the tick as close to the point of insertion as you can. DO NOT grasp it or squeeze it directly by the body as it may force excretion into you. Grasp the tick firmly and pull upwards in a slow steady motion. DO NOT twist the tweezers or jerk rapidly, as you can leave the head embedded in the skin. Clean the affected area and the implement that you removed the tick with, preferably with alcohol, but soap and water is fine. If the tick head remains embedded, either try to remove it with tweezers, or your body will get rid of it naturally if it cannot be removed.
